Introduction to mindfulness training

Online session #1: Tuesday, September 8th
Online session #2: Tuesday, September 22
Online session #3: Tuesday, October 6th

All meetings last from 6:45 PM – 9:15 PM

We invite you to an online course over three evenings that explores classical meditation techniques from the Tibetan tradition in the encounter with today's brain research and psychology.

We will primarily work with two aspects of meditation:
One where the mind is allowed to calm down.
And another: to cultivate a clearer understanding of thoughts and feelings.
At the same time, we want to invite a third quality in, a friendly and open attention where the heart can naturally participate.

These aspects complement and support each other:
In order to examine the mind more clearly, it is necessary for it to first find a certain calm and concentration.
We then use that calm and natural focus to also examine the contents of the mind — thoughts, feelings, memories, plans, and so on.
At the same time, this movement allows room for heart qualities such as kindness, care and concern to unfold naturally.
A clear and traditional image of this is to compare the mind to a glass of muddy water. If it is allowed to stand still, the mud will naturally settle, and the water will, at its own natural pace, become clear again.

Program for each session
Each evening will include theory, guided meditations, movement, exercises and exchange in the group.
The course is organized so that each session builds on the previous one.

Session 1: The Basics — Attention and Rest
The first evening lays the foundation. We begin with a simple meditation technique: the breath as a resting place for attention, and the very basic exercise of returning when attention wanders.

We will touch on what research tells us about attention networks in the brain, about the mind's tendency to wander, and about what happens when we repeatedly bring attention back.

Session 2: Immersion — from concentration to insight
The second evening builds on this. We deepen and refine our practice of gathering attention, and at the same time begin to invite attention to examine its other content: thought patterns, emotions, and bodily sensations.

We will look at what psychological research tells us about our relationship with thoughts and feelings. About automatic reaction patterns, about the difference between experiencing an emotion or other content in the mind and identifying with it. And about the possibility of space and freedom of choice that meditative training can open up.

Session 3: Integration — from the pillow to everyday life
When we begin to find some peace and therefore can feel our minds more clearly, we often discover how vivid and also challenging our inner landscapes can be.

In that place, we will practice meeting the challenges that may arise, such as resistance, difficulty, restlessness, and familiar – and perhaps monotonous – thought patterns.
It is part of the miracle and mystery of consciousness that when we, without judgment, see and give space to whatever may meet us in the present moment, our innate qualities such as creativity, natural intelligence, dedication and kindness begin to spontaneously grow.

Between each session
Between the sessions there will be homework in the form of meditations that support the building and anchoring of what we are working on.
Participants are encouraged to dedicate at least 20 minutes to their own practice, preferably four times a week, based on the exercises and meditations presented in the course.

The sessions can provide direction and understanding, but it is in daily practice that the experiences and the qualities that come with them have the opportunity to develop.

Participants will have access to audio recordings of guided meditations, which can support a regular practice.
