I put one boot toe in front of the other and am preoccupied with the fact that I feel like the only person on this spot on the planet at this moment.

As I walk, I notice tracks in the snow that don't come from humans. I recognize the characteristic tracks of the hare, the deer and the fox, but what is it – a track that I don't recognize at first. It has distinct sharp claws.

I'm counting. There are five, clearly sharp, claws.

Something in me becomes easily disturbed, and it dawns on me that I am the one visiting someone else's territory.

What makes a deep impression on me is the feeling of being alone in the land of animals. I catch myself looking over my shoulder. Wasn't there a sound?

I can kind of sense the eyes of the animals in the area. Maybe I'm disturbing them when I come trudging along in boots and a brightly colored warm jacket. I continue and see that a large animal has cleared a circular area of snow. There they are again. The spurs with claws.

Is that a badger? Are badgers actually dangerous?

And what about wolves? What do their tracks in the snow actually look like?

I'm breathing.

Trying to sense my body.

I feel the loneliness of my existence.

I feel a sense of community with the animals and with the nature I find myself in.

I think that it may be inevitable to be confronted with being alone.

Perhaps you too, dear reader, know how to feel loneliness?

I let my thoughts wander and put boot toe in front of boot toe until I reach the shoreline.

There is ice on the water. It looks almost green at the water's edge, then turns into blue fjord water and then up to the white sky.

A slip.

A break.

Allows you to fully open up to the vastness.

Floating with the moment.

I feel the connection to nature and to our common planet. The Earth.

I feel the connection to the animals and people who inhabit it.

I feel a joy in my heart knowing that the hare, the fox, the badger, the deer, the wolves and I can be in this place together.

Is it possible that something in us humans and animals basically wants each other to be well?

I hope so.

Jeg er den første, der sætter mine støvler i den nyfaldne sne denne morgen.
