Without getting anything for it, without any kind of recognition, even without taking it into his self-esteem as pride, this man faithfully drives out to us every week and from there to where he sells the cardboard. To support FDF, which, again unpaid, helps disadvantaged boys.

The meeting with that man was touching. It made us think about the amount and importance of unpaid work in Denmark. About football and gymnastics coaches. About our rural police officer, Viggo, who in the hall every Monday with tireless kindness and energy coaches children in badminton. About the neighborly helpfulness of our provincial town.

Association work in Denmark, in scout movements, gymnastics associations, football clubs, in parish councils and boards of schools and kindergartens and cooperative housing associations, is one of the most important bonding agents in our society. And one of the least seen and recognized.

There is a hidden secret in doing something for others without getting anything in return. It is not a secret we can say we have figured out or understand, but it can be felt. It is almost mechanical, understood in the way that every time you have done something for someone who is not just part of your immediate family or clan, there is an immediate response, an inexplicable and spontaneous joy flows through you. A feeling of having done the right thing.

Human development, we believe, is largely about discovering and making room for the self-denying secret of selfless action. By following our natural urge to help, we see ever more clearly, through our own actions, that we humans fundamentally want each other well.

Spiritual communities are also built around mutual, selfless help. Modern communities like this too. They cannot exist without it. It takes so much care, so much care with premises and cooking and cleaning and administration to provide deeper teaching in presence and warmth that this teaching would not be able to take place at all without some, almost always close students, having discovered that lending a hand can, in the long run, become an important part of their own process.

Of the communities we have entered into in our lives, those that are oriented towards giving more than they receive have been the most meaningful. And the most fun. It is also a celebration to be part of a vision of doing something for others.
Without suppressing or dissolving our individual uniqueness, a community that has such a goal shifts some of the common focus from what separates us to where we truly meet: in the desire for others to have a good life as well.

Also on Kontemplation's small platform, we try to maintain such a course towards communicating mutual cordiality and presence.

This short video contains glimpses from one of our team weekends.

Hanneli Ågotsdatter
is Kontemplation's daily manager and teacher at our courses and retreats.
