Here is the first exercise. For more exercises, please refer to Children's Life Science's new website.

The photograph shows the two friends, Daniel (11) and Robert (12), at the top of Gaustadtoppen in Norway.

The hot and the cold air.

It's early spring, the air is cold outside, warm inside.

Stand together outside, possibly just in an open window, and breathe together.
Notice how you can choose to breathe through your nose, where the air is both warmed and (slightly) cleaned by the nasal hairs.
And we can open our mouths and inhale the cold air directly.
While you alternate between these two breathing patterns: Talk about whether there is a difference. About situations where you breathe one way – for example, when running fast outdoors you have to breathe through both your mouth and nose – and the other way: If you are preoccupied with smells and odors, you breathe through your nose.

We can ask each other if we remember to breathe. Can a whole day go by without us remembering it? Half a day?
When we, as we are doing right now, talk about breathing, think about it, know a little about it, we make it conscious. While it is conscious, it is easier to relax. Also easier to relax a little bad mood, sadness, worry.
We might talk about some situations where each of us can become worried and tense:
What makes you anxious?
What makes me anxious?
As we talk about this, we keep trying to remember to breathe. It's a game. We're seeing if we can do two things at once: both talk about something and remember to breathe.

Let's take this game indoors. We will now close the window or door, or we will go inside if we had gone outside to breathe in the cold.
Now we part ways, now we continue with what we each have to do. You might have to play or play computer games, I might have to cook. But we both try to notice how long we can remember to breathe.
Of course we will forget it in a moment. Maybe we have already forgotten it now. But the one of us who first realizes that he or she has forgotten it says it to the other: -Oh, now I realized that I had forgotten that I breathe! How long did you remember that?

About the exercise:

We wanted to take advantage of the seasons, so it was natural to take as a starting point the cold of early spring and the contrast between inside and outside.
And in breathing. Performing the seemingly simple or banal act of shifting focus to the fact that you are currently breathing can be an effective means of momentarily lowering the level of tension in the personality.
Everyday language contains this knowledge: – Let's just breathe, we say to each other when we feel taken aback, – Let's just take a deep breath. And if we have been shocked, we say: – I completely lost my breath, or: – I completely lost my breath, or: – I forgot to breathe.
That's why we suggest that children and adults stand in the doorway for a moment and breathe together. In the zone where you can perhaps feel the warm air behind you and the icy air in front of you. Just for a moment.

We don't put a lot of information into the exercise. Just the minimum that can supplement the awareness, support what it's all about: That we feel that we're breathing, that we feel it together, and that we and the child or young person have a short, heartfelt, shared experience that doesn't involve performance, doesn't involve evaluation or comparison.
Which might give rise to sharing experiences: What can make you anxious? What can make me anxious?
While we are aware that we are breathing in and out.

Hanneli Ågotsdatter
is a cand.arch., psychotherapist and meditation teacher.
