Kontemplations Jeanette Lykkegaard<\/a> is now defending his PhD thesis on Tuesday,\u00a0This is Our Life<\/em>, about the life and death of the Chukchi people who live in Kamchatka in north-eastern Siberia.<\/p>\n

Jeanette has lived with the Chukchi, and it is evident from the thesis how she and they have begun to resonate in a way that sharply poses this question: What happens when you, as a researcher, take the people you describe deeper into your heart and consciousness?<\/p>\n

The thesis is moving in the vulnerable openness with which Jeanette describes her love for, and respect for, the Chukchi, and her involvement and life with them.<\/p>\n

\"\"The descriptions are both encouraging and frightening in their depictions of the delicate balance between ancient culture and modern Russia. Of how, so far, the Chukchi, who have gone from being nomads to now being semi-settled, have managed to 'Instead of losing their traditional approach to, and mastery of, the world, they change these approaches so that they can accommodate and care for the separation between life on the tundra and life in the village'.<\/p>\n

Towards the end of the thesis, Jeanette tells about how she Moesgaard Museum<\/a>, in a tent she has brought from Kamchatka, for a Danish family audience, performs a sacrifice to Gihr-Gihr, the representation of the line of ancestors. How she experiences that it is successful, in Jutland, right here, at the museum, to establish an experience of this ritual.<\/p>\n

The thesis ends with a summary of how, for the Chukchi, reality is open and created moment by moment. How this people's knowledge has therefore not, as some anthropologists lamentably argue, been lost. It has, says Jeanette, never existed. It is only now, at this moment, being created.<\/p>\n

The Defence is an open event and will take place on Tuesday, November 26th at 1 pm in the Lecture Hall at Moesgaard, Aarhus University:<\/strong><\/p>\n
